There used to be very popular VPN software to do this but the VPN companies have paid google so much in advertising it seem to be buried. The safe way to do it is to use a VPN between the locations and then access the server as if you were both on the same lan. It tends to not be safe to expose servers like this to the internet. The only cheap way to do this is going to be to place a server in one of your houses.

I do have access to a Ubuntu server with about 1tb free space, so also open to options that would let me share a folder from there if such a thing exists? OneDrive's free account is limited to 5gb too so not that useful. I've tried Google Drive but it seems you cant sync folders shared by other people.
The data isn't sensitive at all, and I trust my friend enough to not upload random viruses to my machine. It's currently at about 8gb of data, but more is certainly welcome. We're trying to play a game with online content where both players need the same content, so we want a way to easily keep each other in sync without having to constantly give each other lists or. The essential part of this folder is it needs to be able to sync all changes to both computers, and files are stored locally on both computers (actually downloaded, instead of just linking the cloud). Importantly, these computers are owned by different people (myself and a friend), but I'm happy to set up a new account on some service that might be able to do it where we can share a password. I'm looking for a way to set up a folder that can be shared between two PCs over the internet.
It hasn't got that kinda space.First, I hope this is in the right category, if not please let me know so I can move it! I am also open to any third party app or non-robocopy method that can achieve this, as long as I am not required to keep the full-sized backup of the External Drives on the laptop. I got a great reply to a seemingly complex query earlier which encouraged me to ask this here.
This way I have more free time at home that can be spent with family and friends (and Netflix). Now, since Robocopy can also be used to sync files across source and destination directory/drives, it got me wondering if there is a way I can do the sorting on the "zero-sized" copy of the external files in my free time (like when I am traveling to and from work) and then sync this sorting to the actual respective external drives when I connect them to the laptop. Now the meat of the query: I have an Unsorted folder in each of my External Drives where I dump files and then sort them to the intended location at a later time. It is useful if the need arises when I am not at home or at work, and also saves me the trouble of firing up the external drives for small searches often. So, currently I use this to make a "zero-sized" copy of my external hard drives on my laptop's drive and use it as a kinda of index to search if and where I have what I am looking for on any of my external drives.

You can use Windows Explorer to search through the files just like normal files, perform cut-copy-paste operations on them, just like normal files, except these files are zero-size. What it does is create a copy of the source directory/drive in the destination directory/drive, but with zero-sized files.
